Bible Study (Fear)

Every person has fears that they struggle with; whether big or small. Seeds of doubt and anxiety are planted by the enemy and used in a feeble attempt to drag us away from our Lord. For those who are close to the Savior, the devil will grasp at sand to try to hurt us or the people around us, and it’s our job to win the little battles he wages by not falling to his traps. This is a spiritual battle and our fear gives him leverage, but the Lord equips us in His word and through the gifts He gives us.

2 Timothy 1:6-7

“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

  • With Jehovah Nissi (The Lord is our banner) as our banner and protector, we have nothing to fear.
  • He has provided us with spirits of power, love, and sound minds so we can work under pressure with grace.
  • The Lord loves us and has given us all we need to move on from fear and to place our trust in Him.

Philippians 4:6-7

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

  • We can request that the Lord take our fear and replace it with peace. He does not want us to fear the things of this world and will give us a sense of peace beyond all understanding.
  • A prayer of thanksgiving and praise to our Lord God works wonders to not only calm us, but to also trump the devil’s plans to harm us. It guards us from being crippled by him.

Prayers of praise for all He has done can create a habit of redirecting ourselves back to our Creator and can protect us from deception. We can repeatedly find ourselves surrendering to His will and putting on His armor of protection. The Holy Spirit can guide us to His will in many ways and this is one of them. Redirection our attention back to His grace is a tactic He encourages.

1 John 4:18

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts our fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.”

  • Perfect love that comes from the Creator throws all fear away.
  • Fear does not come from love. God is love, so fear does not come from God.
  • God wants us to dwell in Him and Him alone, so we should focus on and dwell in His love rather than the fear that the devil causes.

If you are afraid, redirect and dwell in the Lord’s love. Ask Him to hold you close in His everlasting love. Don’t be tormented by fear and things that are not of God. By dwelling on fear you have not been made perfect in love, meaning you have cracks in your foundation and protection. Don’t be discouraged by this though, we are human and without the Lord’s guidance, being perfect is impossible.

Psalm 56:3-4

“Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?”

  • We can trust God to bring the good from the bad. He will protect us from the powers of evil.
  • We can redirect our thoughts from ones of fear to thoughts and prayers of Him. We always have something to praise Him for and we can further glorify Him in this way.

The powers of evil often target our spirits through our carnal flesh. We can battle this by recognizing that fear is a reaction of the flesh from the world. The actions of the world cause a reaction that is not of God. The other people that threaten us, at the end of the day, can’t harm us. Flesh is not eternal, so the actions others commit don’t dictate our fate. We can trust that the action Jesus committed on that cross will dictate our fate: His blood covers our sin, and maybe those people threatening us will come to know His saving grace. We can choose to look at their deeds with the same mercy Jesus showed on the cross when He said, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do!” Instead of fear we can choose mercy, grace, and love.

Psalm 34:4

“I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”

  • James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
  • When we humble ourselves and draw close to our Father, He will draw closer to us in turn.
  • He is sure to strengthen and comfort us when we surrender to His will. That does not mean there won’t be trials, but He will give us hope in the struggle. We don’t need to fear in our God’s hands.
  • Like David, when we seek the Lord’s hear, He will move closer to us and deliver us from fear that is not of Him.

Isaiah 41:9-10

“You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest regions, and said to you, ‘You are My servant, I have chosen you and have not cast you away: Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’”

  • This is God Himself speaking through His chosen prophet Isaiah. He has promised to strengthen and help us.
  • God doesn’t lie— His holiness and righteousness doesn’t allow it.
  • He tells us not to fear because He is with us. Why should we fear when the Creator of the universe, God of possible, God of love, hope, and peace is on our side?

Isaiah 40:28-29 states, “Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength.” We have no reason to fear if He is on our side. Faith in the one true God who holds the world in the palm of His hand is the strongest protection you could have. He has promised power and strength to those who trust Him, and that is something we can believe in our times of fear.

Joshua 1:9

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

  • The Bible tells us to fear not three-hundred sixty-five times, enough to remind us daily who is sovereign and to not dwell in fear.
  • Why fear when the most powerful being in the universe loves you?

God tells us He loves the person, but hates the sin. Of course the Creator would know best for us, so why argue with Him? Why would anybody question Him when everything He has predicted has come to be, everything He has told us has been true, and He is righteous in all ways. He is the only omniscient one, so He knows all, and when He tells us to not fear, we should listen.

Psalm 23:4

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff they comfort me.”

  • David compares life to a walk through the valley of the shadow of death, not just simply the valley of death. This implies that there is a way out from death. To get rid of a shadow, you need to shine a light on it. Even though in this life our flesh remains under the shadow of death, the Lord tells us to not fear.
  • He has made a way to get us out from under death’s thumb. Through Jesus, we have a narrow door to eternal life. Because of this our lives are secure and there is no reason to fear. Jesus is that light God shone on the shadow of death, and now He is in possession of the keys of Hades.

Romans 8:31

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

  • No one poses a true threat to us— maybe physically they potentially could harm us, but we have hope that out lives don’t truly end when our flesh dies.

God— Jehovah Jireh has provided a way for us to be freed from under the devil’s thumb. We don’t need to fear entropy anymore. We must respect the Lord as He is and have faith in Jesus, and we can be saved from eternal death, so fear is unnecessary for the followers of Christ.
